DIY Lighted Makeup Mirror (Broadway style) Vanity

After searching the internet for the perfect vanity and not wanting to spend over $500 for one, pinterest and other blog sites inspired me to make my own. Luckily for me my fiancé was once an electrician's apprentice and helped me do the wire cutting and wiring. We went out to shop for supplies, changed our design a few times during the process but finally came up with a finished product. &This was the result :)

Supplies you'll need:
vanity mirror

porcelain bulb sockets

if the sockets do not come with a kit you will need the right size nipples to attach and hold the sockets to the wiring

replacement lamp cords (or just plain lamp wire and you can attach your own plug)

bulbs

Not pictured:
A drill and wood bit that matches the size of your sockets
Measuring tape
Wire cutters/stripper
Spray paint to match your sockets to the mirror

Measure the sockets to the placement on the mirror

Drill the holes

(This is just a picture of the drilled hole marks, but you will need to drill the holes all the way through)

You will need to cut the wire and intermingle them together so there is 1 current of electricity (2 splices - 1 positive and 1 negative) to all of the bulb sockets

Spray paint the sockets to match, let dry and wire and attach the sockets to your mirror

Screw in your bulbs

And voila!

The desk and set of drawers are from Ikea - Micke.

Thanks for reading &hope this helps!

    1. The wires were placed into each hole from the 1 replacement lamp wire plug. Each hole had 1 piece of the wire facing in and 1 facing out like an upside down U shape so there was 1 current of electricity to each bulb socket. The wire was then cut at the top of the U to make 2 wires 1 for positive and 1 for negative. The picture shows the wires after they were cut in half to make the + and - currents. Hope that helps! If you have anymore questions please let me know! xoxo (the comments are now linked to my email so I can see them as soon as they are posted! sorry it took so long for a response)

    2. Hello, I have a mirror that is already framed like yours and I am wondering what I need to use to drill holes? Does it not crack the glass to drill the holes? Thanks!

  3. I see in the image you posted above you have a few different socket types sitting out. I was able to find both of them on Lowes by searching up the item numbers that are on the packaging you photographed. I'll link them below:

I'm just wanting to know, do you need to purchase both of these or just one of them? Do you need the keyless socket adapter kit AND the hard wired ceiling socket for each hole? Also, did you end up needing the assorted nipple pack or did the ones that came with the first link suffice?

Lastly, what size wood bit did you use and how many lamp replacement cords do you actually have to buy? Do you know if its possible to add a dimmer to this setup?

P.S. Sorry for two accidental incomplete comments above, was trying to post this from my phone. Tried to delete them!

  11. I am also wondering specifically what mirror this is. Instead of building from scratch from wood I'd like to just grab the mirror and do it but fear cutting through the mirror. Has anyone figured one out yet?

    1. You'd have to risk it and buy a carbide bit made specifically for cutting through glass. There's a good tutorial here: https://www.familyhandyman.com/tools/drills/how-to-drill-a-hole-in-glass/view-all/.
